Signs of Roof Water Damage
Most people understand the importance of having a roof over their heads, but it’s also important to keep it in good shape. If that’s not the case, your home can develop mold, mildew, leaks, and other major problems. Your roof serves as a barrier from the outside world and even the smallest leak can cause large-scale problems. To prevent this from happening, here are the telltale signs your roof is leaking.
4 Signs Your Roof is Leaking
The following are common signs of a leaking roof:
1. Drips
It may seem self-explanatory, but if you see drips coming from the ceiling or moisture on the walls, this is a common sign your roof is leaking. Even if the leak seems to be going away, it’s best to get it checked out. Chronic moisture problems can cause permanent damage if they’re not handled appropriately.
2. Water Stains
A water stain looks like a puddle on your ceiling, typically layered with a light brown color around the edges. Although they can be quite noticeable, stains can be difficult to spot as they often occur in dark areas.
3. Missing Shingles
Go outside and see if you have any broken, damaged, or missing shingles. Missing shingles on your roof is a direct pathway for water to enter your home. This issue can be the result of a storm or your roof aging.
4. Damaged Flashing
Flashing is made up of metal strips that are attached to all seams, and edges of your roof. Over time, this can dry out and crack. Because flashing protects some of the most important parts of your roof, any damage is a cause for concern. When flashing cracks or is bent upward, it allows water and moisture to run inside the roof seams.
Damage From a Roof Leak
Many household problems can be put off but a roof leak is not one of them. Having a leaky roof can cause safety and health risks as well as becoming costly along the way. Mold and mildew growth inside of your home is one of the more serious consequences in the long term, especially black mold from water intrusion. It attacks wood framing, ceiling tiles, and walls, can be very difficult to eliminate, and can cause severe health problems.
